This goes against the cultural expectation that women should raise families and tend to their husbands.

Some experts link this new trend with the ‘one-child policy rule’ where families who did have daughters raised them as an old child, which may have something to do with rising population of confident career-driven woman.

A former Wall Street Journal foregin correspondent, Pamela Druckerman, just published her book, Lust in Translation: The Rules of Infidelity from Tokyo to Tennessee. It hasn’t received great reviews, yet. She compares how different cultures define adultery and how they conceptualize infidelity.

Here’s some interesting data Druckerman found:
-Only 3.8 of married men and 2% of women in France admitted to having affairs
-In the U.S. 3.9 percent of men and 3.1 percent of women acklnowledged cheating
-6 percent of Americans in one survey said it was ok to cheat in some or all situations, nearly 40 percent of Russians polled saw no problem with it.

Are some truths really better left unspoken? Yes, according to Drukerman. It’s a French idea she sympathizes with.

I heard an interesting story tonight on BBC about how baby boomers in Japan are now spending more time with their spouses than ever before as they head into retirement.

Shame and money have always big issues for Japanese women who initiate 75% of all divorces in their country. But a recent change to a pension law in Japan will allow women who divorce eligibility to receive up to half of their husband’s pension plans. Experts anticipate between the new plan and retirement there will be a spike in the number of divorces in Japan.

I wonder if the same trend is occurring here in the U.S. among baby boomers. Are couples spending too much time together now that they are retired? Are they getting along as they did when at least one of the spouses was working full-time?
