			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>Roman civil law embraced the saying, &ldquo;matrimonia debent esse libera&rdquo; (&#8220;marriages ought be free&#8221;).</p>
<p>Just out of curiosity, I looked up <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divorce">&#8216;divorce&#8217; in wikipedia </a>to see what came up. And I thought I would share a few things I discovered about the history of divorce:</p>
<p>-Divorce existed in antiquity, and dated back to ancient Mesopotamia, at least.<br />
-Ancient Athenians liberally allowed divorce.</p>
<p>I also discovered that:</p>
<p>-<a href="http://www.moyak.com/researcher/resume/papers/athenian_women.html">Athenian women were allowed to divorce</a>, but if and only if their family agreed they should. And in all cases the woman lost her children who would stay with the father.</p>
